Esport is becoming increasingly popular in Kenya

For years, video games were the only escapism of Brian Diang’a. Today, the Kenyan pro-player is able to make a living out of his passion, in a country where unemployment is still high among youths.

For Brian Diang’a, everything started in 2013 when he discovered YouTube videos of other players taking part in “Mortal Kombat” competitions, a game he loved. Since then, he has been working hard to try and make a name for himself in the esport field.

Choosing this path is quite unorthodox in Kenya, where academic pursuits and sports are seen as the only paths towards success. As more Kenyans are getting into competitive gaming, the absence of any structure makes it difficult for them to pursue a professional career. Diang’a hopes that, with new improvements, esport will explode across Africa.
