The exhibition shows that video games can be works of art

The late American critic Roger Ebert infamously said that video games could never be art, but there is now ample evidence to the contrary.

The “WORLDBUILDING: Gaming and Art in the Digital Age” exhibition in Düsseldorf wants to emphasise the central role of video games within the 21st century. Hans Ulrich Obrist, the curator of the show, chose 30 multimedia works that elevate the world of gaming to the one of art.

For instance, “The Great Adventure of Material World” by Lu Yang resembles an RPG game and invites visitors to control an avatar and fight different enemies. It also addresses existentialist themes and asks visitors to ponder about our materialistic society. The “WORLDBUILDING: Gaming and Art in the Digital Age” will be open until December 10, 2023.
