UK’s antitrust regulator blocks Microsoft's purchase of Activision, citing concerns over competition in Cloud Gaming sector

Microsoft's planned purchase of gaming giant Activision has been blocked by the UK's antitrust regulator due to concerns about its impact on competition in the cloud gaming sector.

Cloud gaming allows gamers to pay monthly fees and access a suite of games without the need for physical consoles or purchases. The sector is predicted to be worth at least $40 billion by 2030, with Microsoft already the dominant player through its Game Pass service.

While Cloud Gaming is still a relatively small piece of the gaming industry, its potential for transformative impact is significant. The decision to block Microsoft's purchase had unexpected consequences for the sector. In fact, experts suggest that the licensing of Activision games to other suppliers, as the company had promised, would have provided a much-needed boost for the industry as a whole.
