Nintendo's future hinged on the release of a new ‘Zelda’ game

Nintendo is pinning its hopes on the latest instalment of the 40-year-old franchise, "Zelda," to revive its business after predicting a decline in profits this year.

‘Tears of the Kingdom’ released on Friday, 12 May 2023 with clips that had already been circulating online, having racked up millions of views and generated feverish excitement among fans. The series of Princess Zelda and the elf-like warrior Link has sold 125 million copies worldwide since 1986. Zelda helped to pioneer the concept of “open-world” games, which are now seen in popular titles like ‘Grand Theft Auto’ and ‘Skyrim’.

The main challenge this year is to increase sales for Nintendo's ageing Switch console, which has been on shelves for seven years. Analysts predict that the game will be "the biggest contributor to Nintendo's sales this year". Despite the enduring popularity of Nintendo's franchises, including the recently released "Super Mario Bros. Movie," the company has forecast a 21% drop in net profits this year, making the success of the Zelda release crucial for the company's finances.
